Lava launches quad-core Iris 504Q smartphone for Rs 13,499

Lava has jumped into the quad-core smartphone battle with the Iris 504Q, which was launched today and will hit stores with a Rs 13,499 price tag. See our review of the Lava Iris 504Q. 

The Iris 504Q will take on the likes of Micromax Canvas HD, XOLO Q1000 and a host of other low-cost phones with a very similar specs sheet. Firstly, there’s a now-standard MediaTek MT6589 quad-core processor ticking under the hood. It’s clocked at 1.2GHz, just like every other MT6589 out there. There’s 1GB of RAM to keep it running lagfree. Another good thing about the 504Q is that it runs stock Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, with no customisations even in the notification drawer. Performance should be quite smooth.The display is a 5-incher with a 1280 x 720 resolution, just like every other local smartphone out there. Camera on the back is an 8 megapixel shooter with a single LED flash, while the front-facing VGA camera sounds like it would be a disappointment. This one is a dual-SIM smartphone and has Wi-Fi up to the n band, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB OTG support. The 2000 mAh battery also sounds rather limited in capacity and we would not put our money on it lasting a full day on a single charge with some connectivity.

Interestingly, Lava has built in a gesture control system that lets users control some apps (the gallery being one) with a wave over the motion sensor above the display. This is very similar to the Galaxy S4 implementation of Air Gestures. You can even click pictures with a wave of your hand. The 504Q comes bundled with Gameloft’s Modern Combat 2 and there’s a Fusion music player, which lets you stream and download any song that is hosted on the popular free streaming websites. Included in the box is an extra back panel that doubles up as the flip cover.
