Champions Trophy: India dismiss Pakistan by eight wickets in rain-hit contest

India travel to Cardiff for semifinals while Pakistan go home empty handed.

Birmingham: Shikhar Dhawan's 41-ball 48 and his 58-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma helped India pummel Pakistan by eight wickets (D/L method) in a rain-hit group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy, here on Saturday. This was India's first win against Pakistan in three Champions Trophy meetings. (Match Highlights: India vs Pakistan as it happened)

Unbeaten in three matches, India topped their group and will travel to Cardiff on Monday for the tournament's second semifinal at Sophia Gardens on June 20. Pakistan will go home empty handed. South Africa are the second team to make the round of last four from group B. The Proteas will play the first semifinal at The Oval on June 19. The semifinalists from group A are still undecided. (Match in pics)
In a match that was hit by four rain interruptions, India were finally given a target of 102 from 22 overs. After Pakistan were all out for 165 in 39.4 overs, India had to get 168 from 40 overs. After the first rain break, the target was revised to 157 from 36. (Key moments of the match)

The rain probably spared Pakistan a bigger humiliation. (Blog: A show of Asian solidarity at Edgbaston)

Sharma and Dhawan were again in good touch. On an Edgbaston wicket where the Pakistan new ball bowlers - Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan - bend their back and extracted some pace and bounce, the batsmen looked quite at ease.

With rains looming on the horizon, the Indians were virtually racing along, scoring 45 in the mandatory powerplay of eight overs. Dhawan was in a punishing mood, twice slapping Junaid in the arc between point and extra-cover. His love for cuts and pulls threw Pakistan's pacers off gear. But his strength also plotted his downfall as he was caught at backward point trying to cut Wahab Riaz.

Dhawan's 48 contained five fours and his innings put India on the doorstep of victory. Virat Kohli, who exquisitely drove Saaed Ajmal for a four in the second ball he faced, scored a typically solid 22 not out and his 24-run stand with Dinesh Karthik (11 not out) saw India home with 17 balls to spare.

Earlier, losing six wickets in less than 10 overs, Pakistan were all out for an unimpressive 165. Asad Shafiq's 41 was the lone bright spot on a cloudy day as Pakistan batted for just 39.4 overs.

Pakistan's top order again saw a familiar collapse. Nasir Jamshed, who has scored all his three ODI centuries against India, failed to reproduce his magic this time. The left-handed opener was circumspect and got a lifeline when on 1. Given out LBW by field umpire Richard Kettleborough, the batsman was saved by the Decision Review System but his innings was soon ended by a beauty from Man of the Match Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

On an overcast morning after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to field, Kumar, India's best bowler with 2 for 19, swung the ball both ways and found the edge of Jamshed's tentative bat for Suresh Raina to complete an easy catch at second slips. Jamshed scored just 2 runs off nine balls.

Kamran Akmal and Mohammed Hafeez consolidated the innings but showers sent the players back in the pavilion for the first time in the stop-star contest.

The 46-run second wicket stand was over immediately after resumption. Hafeez offered a loose stroke to an innocuous Kumar delivery to edge to a diving Dhoni. Hafeez was out for a 31-ball 27 that was laced with five fours, two of them off successive Umesh Yadav deliveries.

India introduced spin in the 14th over, courtesy Ravichandran Ashwin. With rain clouds threatening the match, Dhoni wanted to complete the overs quickly. After looking good for 21 runs that contained two well-timed boundaries, Akmal, promoted to open the innings in place of an out-of-form Imran Farhat, threw his wicket away. He went for a big drive against the turn and the inside edge flew to Virat Kohli at leg slip off Dhoni's pads.

Pakistan lost wickets in a hurry after the second rain beak. The match was reduced to 40-over-a-side and green shirts lost three crucial middle-order wickets in 15 balls and added just nine runs. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq was the first to go, bowled by an arm-ball from Ravichandran Jadeja. He made 22 off 33 balls, and with Shafiq, produced 54 crucial runs for the fourth wicket, Pakistan's best of the day.

India eventually got rid of Shafiq, thanks to the DRS, a technology that the Indian cricket Board hates. The umpire turned down a caught behind appeal after Dhoni held on to a faint nick on the leg side. The Indians appealed for a review and the hotspot revealed a fine inside edge. It gave Ishant Sharma the first of his two wickets in the match.

Shoaib Malik lost his review after he was given out LBW to a ball that hit him plumb in front of the middle-stump. Malik played across the line to a straight ball that hurried off the wicket after scoring 17 good runs but lost his composure under pressure.

But for a gutsy 27 not out off 26 balls from Umar Amin, the Pakistan tail refused to wag. A combination of good fielding and tight bowling snuffed out any further challenge from the Pakistanis.

Lava launches quad-core Iris 504Q smartphone for Rs 13,499

Lava has jumped into the quad-core smartphone battle with the Iris 504Q, which was launched today and will hit stores with a Rs 13,499 price tag. See our review of the Lava Iris 504Q.
The Iris 504Q will take on the likes of Micromax Canvas HD, XOLO Q1000 and a host of other low-cost phones with a very similar specs sheet. Firstly, there’s a now-standard MediaTek MT6589 quad-core processor ticking under the hood. It’s clocked at 1.2GHz, just like every other MT6589 out there. There’s 1GB of RAM to keep it running lagfree. Another good thing about the 504Q is that it runs stock Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, with no customisations even in the notification drawer. Performance should be quite smooth. The display is a 5-incher with a 1280 x 720 resolution, just like every other local smartphone out there. Camera on the back is an 8 megapixel shooter with a single LED flash, while the front-facing VGA camera sounds like it would be a disappointment. This one is a dual-SIM smartphone and has Wi-Fi up to the n band, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB OTG support. The 2000 mAh battery also sounds rather limited in capacity and we would not put our money on it lasting a full day on a single charge with some connectivity.

Interestingly, Lava has built in a gesture control system that lets users control some apps (the gallery being one) with a wave over the motion sensor above the display. This is very similar to the Galaxy S4 implementation of Air Gestures. You can even click pictures with a wave of your hand. The 504Q comes bundled with Gameloft’s Modern Combat 2 and there’s a Fusion music player, which lets you stream and download any song that is hosted on the popular free streaming websites. Included in the box is an extra back panel that doubles up as the flip cover.

Facebook, Microsoft release surveillance information

Following an agreement with the US government, several Internet companies – Microsoft, Facebook, to name a few – will be putting out information, albeit limited in nature, about the number of the surveillance requests they've received. As part of the agreement, the companies can release the number of government requests they receive, without breaking out the number that comes from National Security Agency program.

On its part, software giant Microsoft Corp has revealed that in the latter half of 2012, it received between 6,000 and 7,000 criminal and national security warrants, subpoenas and orders that affected around 32,000 consumer accounts from local, state and federal US governmental entities.

As for Facebook’s data, its general counsel Ted Ullyot said in a statement that Facebook can mention total numbers, but is “lobbying to reveal more”. As per the agreement, Ullyot revealed that Facebook received between 9,000 and 10,000 requests from government entities in the last six months of 2012 –  on topics ranging from missing children to terrorist threats.

These reports follow earlier reports that linked Google, Microsoft and Facebook among others, to the PRISM programme. Soon after, Google's Larry Page put out a post on Google titled "What the...?". Page said the company did provide the National Security Agency access to email and other personal information transmitted on various online services. “We have not joined any program that would give the U.S. government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the U.S. government does not have direct access or a “back door” to the information stored in our data centers. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday,” Page said in a post, co-signed by David Drummond, Google’s Chief Legal Officer.

What is coming soon in your smartphones

Solar-powered displays for your smartphones

From receiving calls to surfing on the web, smartphones today are capable of doing multiple things at a lightning fast speed. While every aspect of a mobile phone has come a long way, one thing remains constant – poor battery life.

One solution is solar power to charge the battery in the day. Samsung did it in 2009 with the E1107, which used the solar power to charge its battery when needed. But the phone did not do well as the solar panel was on the back. Aside from being impractical, this also meant that the phone had to be kept face-down, sometimes resulting in damage.

But a new implementation of solar panels could change things once again for those hoping for alternative and eco-friendly ways to charge their phone. IEEE Spectrum reports about a French startup, SunPartner, founded by optician Joel Gilbert and businessman Ludovic Deblois, which has a solution to the solar problem. SunPartner's methods involve putting a solar panel on the screen of the phone, thus allowing users to use their phones in the normal manner while still being able to recharge the phone to a certain extent.

SunPartner uses stripes of thin-film solar cells on the screen and a layer of tiny lenses is added on top so that the image displayed by the screen is still visible despite the solar cells. The photovoltaic cells capture the light, while the viewer can still see the display on the phone. This method currently adds about 20 percent to your phone's battery life. The company has stated that these solar stripes are currently 82 percent transparent, but they are working on making them 90 percent transparent.

SunPartner also said that using these solar panels in manufacturing smartphones will add $2.30 to the cost. The price seems low enough, but the efficacy of this method leaves much to be desired. A $2.30 outlay for around 20 percent extra battery life may seem too much for OEMs, but this tech also allows the battery to remain topped up when the phone is not being used in normal daylight.

The report does not mention whether the panel affects picture quality of the display. In any case, now that there is some foundational work done on this subject, it won't be long before we hear about a proper working solar-powered display. SunPartner is currently working with three manufacturers — Nokia is said to be one of them — to develop prototypes and claims the first phones with the new technology will be in markets in 2014.

I WANT AZAD TO HAVE A NORMAL LIFE

I WANT AZAD TO HAVE A NORMAL LIFE, SAYS KIRAN RAO

Filmmaker-actor Aamir Khan's wife, Kiran Rao, says she wants their one-and-a-half-year-old son Azad to have a normal childhood just like any other boy. On December 1, 2011, Aamir and Kiran became proud parents of a baby boy. He was born to a surrogate mother using in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and was named Azad Rao Khan, after Aamir's great-grandfather Abul Kalam Azad.

"I guard Azad's privacy a lot. I try very hard not to let his view of the world be different, because he is the son of a big star. I know this is the way things are, but I hope he to have as much normalcy in his life as much as possible... despite having a famous father," Kiran told PTI here today.

"I don't know if I would fit in or enjoy it when things are written or spoken about us. I think it is quite natural if there is any big celebrity... everything that happens in the family is out (in the news). I am getting used to it. But I still value my privacy a lot," she said.

ICC Champions Trophy:

Won't give Pakistan a consolation prize, says MS Dhoni

Birmingham: Mahendra Singh Dhoni said India won't give Pakistan a consolation prize at Edgbaston on Saturday. India's Captain Cool challenged Pakistan to a duel even though the group B ICC Champions Trophy fixture is inconsequential from a tournament perspective. India are already in the semifinals and Pakistan will be catching a flight home, probably on Monday. When told that that Pakistan were treating Saturday's match "as a final," Dhoni replied: "Well, there are two ways to look at it. If their thinking is that they have nothing really to lose, let's go out, be expressive on the field, don't bother about the result, then they can be dangerous. (Also read:Misbah treating match vs India as final)

"But if the thinking is they are not qualified, this is a game against India, let's win this game so we have it as a consolation prize, they'll be in big trouble. So it depends entirely on what Pakistan are thinking." Dhoni also flaunted India's batting muscle in this championship. India have scored 300-plus runs thrice in four games after arriving in the UK and all top six batsmen are in great nick. The opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have twice put on 100-plus stands. Dhoni can't depend on the openers alone.

"We don't need 100-plus opening stands every time we go out to bat," he said. "We are a side relying on good starts but don't always need 100-run stands from the openers. We need partnerships in the middle that can keep the runs flowing," Dhoni said.

While admitting all India-Pakistan matches were big games, Dhoni said it would be suicidal to take extra pressure. "It's surely an important game. All international sides are good and packed with good fast bowlers. Pakistan also have good spinners in (Saeed) Ajmal and (Mohammed) Hafeez. We will not change our approach," Dhoni said. (Related read: Pak team in great spirits, says team manager)

With rain clouds hovering over Edgbaston, the Indians were forced to train indoors at the Edgbaston Cricket Centre on Friday afternoon. The toss could be a factor in Saturday's clash, feels Dhoni.

"Once you get closer to the game, the forecasts, they are a bit more realistic. So we'll see how it goes. What also needs to be seen is whether it will be so much rain affected that the team that bats second may end up only batting 20 or 25 overs, and then the team who has batted first has a bit of a disadvantage," explained the Indian skipper.

Jiah Khan suicide case: Sooraj Pancholi in judicial custody till June 27

MUMBAI: A Mumbai court on Thursday sent Sooraj Pancholi, son of actor couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, to judicial custody till June 27 on charges of abetting the suicide of actress Nafisa alias Jiah Khan.
Shortly after the court decision, Sooraj's lawyer said he would move a bail plea in a sessions court. Sooraj was arrested on Monday.Sooraj, 22, was presented in the court after the end of his three days' police custody.
The public prosecutor sought more time for questioning the accused in police custody to unravel details on Jiah's suicide, especially since he (Sooraj) had allegedly deleted all mobile records of SMSes and MMSes sent by the late actress.
Police contended that statements of as many as 27 people had been recorded.
Sending Sooraj to judicial custody, the court ruled that he would be lodged in the Arthur Road Central Jail.
Sooraj's arrest came soon after a letter penned by Jiah was recovered by her family who handed it over to police last week. In the six-page letter, Jiah also mentioned about her abortion.
Jiah ended her life by hanging herself at her Juhu home June 3.

ATM skimming

'ATM skimming' used in robbing Mumbai cops of Rs 15.48 lakhs

With every new instance, it seems the resolve of cyber thieves is only getting stronger – and bolder. Unidentified miscreants targeted as many as 37 bank accounts – 15 of which belonged to Mumbai cops, in an instance of what is popularly referred to as “ATM skimming”.

While only slim details emerged yesterday, when the incident had first been reported, fresh details have emerged since. Not only were the 37 victims robbed of amounts to the tune of Rs 15.48 lakh, the said amount had been withdrawn at an ATM located in faraway Greece. A Mumbai Mirror report has revealed that cyber-thieves managed to break into an ATM machine – by way of ATM skimming – at the Maharashtra Police headquarters, Colaba and went on to make withdrawals from several ATMs in Greece. The ATM at the police headquarters reportedly belongs to Axis Bank, where Mumbai Police personnel have their salary accounts. It was only when the victims began receiving SMSes notifying them of withdrawals in Greece that they understood that the security of their accounts had been compromised. They approached the back soon and discovered that only the ones who used the ATM at the Colaba headquarters had been affected.

Reportedly, the case was first registered with the NM Joshi Marg police station in Lower Parel, but was later transferred to the Colaba Police Station. Also, a case has been registered under Sections 420, 465, 471 of the IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act.

This is a developing story. We will update this article as and when we learn of more developments.

Google launches Project Loon

Google launches Project Loon, brings Internet through balloons in near space

Google is launching Internet-beaming balloons into near space as part of an ambitious project to provide faster Internet to the world. Project Loon, which was so far kept under a tight lid, was announced in New Zealand earlier today and 50 volunteer households have already got connected. The homes are enjoying 3G-like speeds thanks to the helium balloons that sail about 20 km above Earth. At the moment, the balloon project is still in the experimental stage, but the search giant has the lofty plan of launching thousands of them to bring the Internet to even the most remote parts of the world. The technology is seen as an alternative to installing expensive fibre-optic cables in developing countries.Besides bringing Internet to the world, Google hopes the balloons can one day be used in disaster-affected regions, where on-ground communication has been hampered. Each balloon is nearly 50 feet in diameter and an electronic equipments hang underneath each carrier, which include  radio antennae, a flight computer, an altitude control system and solar panels. Google says each balloon is able to stay aloft for about 100 days and provide connectivity to an area stretching 40 km in diameter below them. "It's pretty hard to get the internet to lots of parts of the world," Richard DeVaul, chief technical architect at Google [x], the company’s top-secret division, which develops programmes like this, told the BBC. "Just because in principle you could take a satellite phone to sub-Saharan Africa and get a connection there, it doesn't mean the people have a cost-effective way of getting online. The idea behind Loon was that it might be easier to tie the world together by using what it has in common - the skies - than the process of laying fibre and trying to put up cellphone infrastructure."Google has plans to bring Project Loon to Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Australia and is looking to tie up with other organisations to fit similar equipment on buildings.
